It is so hard to say goodbye of over 50 years of joy, laughter and love to my sister, friend and yes, family.
Our journey started in our early 20's when I met Claudette during an interview. We had so many things in common that it was just natural that our friendship would blossom. Both loved jazz, concerts, riding in the mountains, the beaches, going to discos, ( telling my age) and driving a stickshift. Oh did I say we were both born in the same month!! Our lives were filled with excitement and fun. Claudette had a MG convertible that each year she would paint a different color. I remember when she applied to Cornell and was rejected. Claudette one afternoon typed a letter to Admissions explaining that given an opportunity she would become an asset to the institution. Of course she was admitted, graduated and also met Fred at Cornell. It was now the three of us traveling, dining and just enjoying life. With time came more responsibilities but we always stayed in touch. Meeting up in the City for a show, musical or just dinner. I remember when she opened her business there I was on the subway holding on for dear life with a vacuum cleaner in hand. There are so many fond memories that when I recall them I just smile and remember her laughter and that smile. Rest in peace Claudette. I will always as we would end each conversation love you.

A Tribute to Claudette

My friendship with Claudette started over 20 years ago. It was forged out of need, mostly my need to connect with someone who was not only a single mother, but a single mother to my daughter’s brother. Claudette’s son Raphael and my daughter Katie are siblings, which makes us what exactly? Well, as it turns out, two moms who became good friends.
I sought out Claudette when Katie was just a baby and Raphy was nearly 7. We ended up living in adjacent neighborhoods so it was not difficult for us to meet up occasionally with the kids. For a while, I don’t think we knew what to make of each other. We did not have much in common, Claudette being a successful business woman and me working in publishing. She was incredibly independent and made decisions without wavering. I like to think of myself as independent, but I was pretty helpless without my large family. Of course, the relationship that bonded us was the relationship between our kids. We knew Fred wanted Raphy and Katie to be close, but Claudette and I had to do our parts too. And we did. We learned to trust each other so we knew how our kids were doing when they were not with us. With phone calls and texts, I followed Raphy’s academic career; Claudette heard a lot of stories about Katie. We shared books and exchanged recipes. And always we started our conversations with: What’s new with Raphy? What’s going on with Katie?
Claudette was incredibly proud of Raphael and she was not shy about sharing his accomplishments. In fact, I’ve never met a mom more vocal about her child’s success. And why shouldn’t she be? Raphael is smart and caring, responsible and kind. He was by her side every step of her cancer treatment. I saw the depth of his love for his mother first hand. The last time I saw Claudette was in the hospital. Raphy was getting ready to leave the room as I arrived. It took almost 30 minutes for him to say goodbye to Claudette. Each time he tried to say goodbye, he’d tell her he loved her, that she needed to stay strong, that he would be back soon. It was an act of devotion I have rarely seen. It was heartbreaking.
I did not know that was the last time I would see her. If I had, I would have told her I admired her strength and her fearlessness, her determination to keeping it real. I would have thanked her for her friendship and her advice. Raphael’s grief will be deep, but he will know he was her sun, her moon and all her stars, and their devotion to each other will always remain.

Upstate snow storm has prevented our family from joining yours in celebration of your life and sadness at its passing. But we are there in spirit and love. Q: What was Claudette really good at?
A: Claudette was a straight shooter who gave it to you straight with no chaser, but it was always coming from a helpful and loving place. She was like an aunt to me. She guided me in my business efforts and provided a wealth of wisdom. She will be sorely missed.

Claudette was an inspiring person, always on the go and a good friend. I knew her in a business capacity, she was a successful businesswoman, fabulous networker and friend to Marshland Connections networking group. We so miss her.
